On the 1st of December 1820 August von Gymnich gave the first semi-public performance of Erlkönig at a private musical party at the house of Ignaz von Sonnleithner. The parties were held once a fortnight, with an audience of around 120 people, and were organised by Leopold von Sonnleithner, the son of Ignaz, and a friend of Schubert from the Stadtkonvikt. The first fully public performance, by Vogl and Anselm Hüttenbrenner, was on the 7th March 1821.
